As an aside, most people think startups are fast because they work harder and are more ambitious. The truth is that most of the speed difference comes from having far less dependencies (and few customers to upset if something screws up), so it’s just easier to get stuff done.
Ray Tsang, Developer Advocate at Google, gave a presentation titled Docker Tips and Tricks for Java Developers to the Chicago Java User’s Group today. Despite having run Docker in production for nearly 2 years, I got a ton out of it. I’m a man driven by lists. I keep a Kanban board to help me manage my life. Lists help me comprehend and prioritize both things to come and experiences past. Some lists are fleeting, like a shopping list for the grocery store. Others may live forever but constantly change to reflect what is most important to you at that time.

A post is long overdue. It’s been a crazy year: Uptake has blown up; I’ve learned a ton; and we’re nearing the end of remodeling our home. The cool thing is, I’m still finding (some) time to code. Today, I present one of my “projects.”
I had to do some exploration into CDN and site optimization options as part of a “Buy vs. Build” analysis. One option stood out above the rest in CloudFlare. I took the opportunity to use this site to not only evaluate the performance boost, but also finally serve the site over HTTPS.
I recently needed to migrate our company’s git repositories from GitHub to an on-prem BitBucket instance without completely blocking the on-going work of >100 engineers. While Atlassian provides a tool to import, I couldn’t find the tool in our instance of BitBucket and had to resort to the built-in tools in git as described in the GitHub documentation:
I slapped together an app on the MEAN stack and deployed it out on Heroku so that people could RSVP to our wedding (demo,source). It allowed us to automatically aggregate the guest list. After the wedding, we wanted to use the domain we had purchased somehow. We considered a travel blog, but, as you know, I’ve already got a blog that I barely manage.
Part two of our honeymoon had us setting off for Serengeti National Park a few hundred miles further inland. Our choices were to either drive approximately 8 hours - effectively loosing a day of our vacation - or fly for 90 minutes. What I didn’t realize was that “flying” meant bush planes who’s model number included the word “model” - which makes me think of those toy store kits you glue together and paint in your basement.
